(12th - 16th March 2017).
This is my third week, I noticed that my MST doing a lot of assessments and evaluations for phonics, writing, reading, spelling, math and science. the monitor school teacher called her students one by one and give them orally and written questions. It is the end of the second term in Cranleigh and my MST is supposed to write a report about each student to be present in their portfolios.
I learned the difference between assessment and evaluation my MST explained that the main goal of doing assessment is allowing learners to practice their skills. However, assessments are useful for the teacher to figure out the learning levels for her students and gives them feedback. On the other hand, I learned that evaluation focus in putting grades depending on specific criteria that usually occur at the end of the terms.
As I learned in previous courses, it is important for the teacher to assess students in order to understand their capacities. This understanding, allows the teacher to target the ZPD for each student when he/she planning for activities. According to Vygotsky, during ZPD teachers should allow students to enhance their skills by giving them tasks and guidance based on their levels. Vygotsky believes that adults are responsible for assisting the child's learning that explains why my MST offering a range of assessments.
For me, the most interesting aspect of assessment was assisting reading which includes a variety of activities. For instance, the guided reading which applying in small groups and the partner reading which applying in pairs. I learned the process of guided reading which includes three stages: before reading, during reading, and after reading. However, in partner reading one student read his/her story the other listen then they turn the roles. I noticed that year’s 1 curriculum is focusing on improving reading skills among young children. In my opinion, reading will help children in mastering language, thinking logically, and building social skills.
Having applied the assessment and evaluation with my MST give me as a student teacher a real opportunity to realize the differences between learners. This experience will be useful to me as a practitioner because it taught me many techniques and strategies for assessments. This means that teachers have a huge responsibility at the end of each term which required a good managing for the time.
